Scales of injustice: menopause and weight gain combine for the perfect storm

Scales of injustice: menopause and weight gain combine for the perfect storm: "It's that extra pinch from the button on your jeans. That pull against your shirt that surely wasn't there last year.

A study of more than 7000 women released this week found once they reach their late 40s, they were likely to gain weight irrespective of how closely they followed Australian Dietary Guidelines.

If you want to make it through your 50s and get into your 60s and 70s with less of the chronic diseases then focus on having that high nutrient intake.

"They get to the 40 or 50-something age group and all of a sudden they are struggling with their weight, " chief investigator Professor Clare Collins says.

Her study followed healthy women aged 48 to 56 for six years and found those who ate the healthiest foods gained just as much weight as those who ate the least healthy foods - about 1.7 kilos."
